Let me begin by wishing a Happy April 30th to a certain someone who will be teeing off on the golf course very shortly. Enjoy it, Dad! Also, I have to grumble about the Habs’ second loss in a row. Things are not looking encouraging. The only good news is we’re back on the road, where we seem to play better. Here’s hoping tomorrow night’s game is another much-needed win.
Now, back to life in Oz.
I’ve spent the last few nights in Noosa, a resort town on the Sunshine Coast, just north of Brisbane. The main activity here, not surprisingly, is beach-related. I’ve spent quite a bit of time doing just that (me and my SPF). I also went on a couple of walks through the local national park, and even saw an echidna. No photos, sorry.
Yesterday, I did a daytrip to Fraser Island, which is a world heritage site due to it being the world’s largest sand island. There aren’t any rocks or soil on Fraser Island. Instead, lush rainforest grows right in the sand, because moving sand dunes break down layers of vegetation, which provides the sustenance for new roots to grow. The result is an island that is very green, but is still entirely made of sand. Very cool.
The tour used a 4WD bus that drove right along the beach (it’s actually considered highway, with all road rules applying) and up over the sand dunes. We went on a walk through the rainforest, swimming in the pristine Lake Mackenzie, and for a picnic lunch at a resort. On the way back, we stopped to see the coloured sands along Rainbow Beach. It was a fun day, though everything I own is now sand-covered.
At this point, the weather’s still bearable – hot for a few hours at midday, but cool enough to be comfortable at night. That won’t last much longer, though. I can already feel signs of the sticky humidity awaiting me further up the coast. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to getting up there.
Miss you guys lots!
