Departure day
Hi from Trudeau Airport, where we’re at the gate waiting to board our first flight to Mexico City. It’s a rainy, chilly, miserable day outside in Montreal. And I hear it’s gonna be sunny and 23 degrees in Lima today. So it’s all good.
This morning started off painfully early, with a 4:30am wake-up call. We shared an Uber to the airport, managing to avoid both morning rush hour and the worst of the construction in the process.
Aeromexico IT fail
We made sure to arrive here the full three hours ahead, because, well, to make a long story short, Aeromexico’s website sucks and we had all kinds of problems with online check-in yesterday. First it wouldn’t let any of us select seats for free on the international site, demanding payment even though it was less than 24 hours in advance. We finally figured out that the Mexican site in Spanish worked just fine, so Vanessa and Marie were able to check in there. I wasn’t, though, for some unknown reason involving a ghost duplicate booking in their system or something. So we had to wait in line the old-fashioned way, and get everything sorted out this morning.
I love travel. But flying is the pits. When will that Star Trek transporter be invented already? Or Harry Potter-style apparating? Heck, I’d even take floo powder. Just skip the airports and beam me to wherever I’m going next.
(As a side note: If anyone is looking for a new job, I’m thinking Aeromexico will need to hire a new head of IT sometime soon.)
Let’s skedaddle
Whatever the case, it’s all good now. We sped through security, where, for perhaps the first time in her life, Vanessa didn’t get pulled over for secondary screening. We enjoyed a leisurely breakfast with coffee, croissants and even poutine. (No beer, though; it really is too early for that. It’s coffee hour.) We spent some time browsing at the duty free shops, trying on ridiculous hats and such. And we’re now sitting at the gate. The flight looks like it’s on time so far. So, with any luck, we’ll be in Peru by tonight.
Meanwhile, Montreal, enjoy the spring, watch out for the potholes, and try not to despair about the lack of hockey too much.
We’re outta here. See you all soon
